Rather than rewrite what has already been well written, I’ve reprinted below an article below originally printed April 20, 2011 in This Week’s Grandview Edition by Alan Froman, because he did an excellent job getting the details. The team working on the Trees project meets the third Tuesday of each month at 7pm at Holy Trinity Church, 2001 Northwest Blvd. and is led by Bruce Mortland. The Trees team is actively looking for new residents to get involved in making this dream a reality. From sorting through the zoning needs of the individual tree locations to raising funds to getting permission from local businesses to plant the trees once we do have the funds in place to recruiting MORE volunteers to help care for the trees once they’re planted – WHEW! there is something for you to do! Help make Fifth Ave. a greener place to be!

The Friends of 43212 organization has selected West Fifth Avenue as the target area for its 2011 “Keep 43212 Beautiful” campaign.

The organization will be raising funds to purchase trees to be planted along West Fifth Avenue, said Fifth by Northwest Area Commission president Becky Obester.

The commission is not a sponsor of the beautification campaign, but is in full support of the effort, she said.

Legally, the commission cannot be involved in fundraising, Obester said.

The initial goal is to plant 25 trees this fall, she said.

“Long-term, we’ll looking to plant about 168 trees in total,” Obester said.

The city of Columbus has partnered with the Friends of 43212 and will provide assistance in designing the beautification plan, tree selection, delivery, planting and maintenance, she said.

Details about the plan will be discussed by the director of the Columbus Neighborhood Design Center at a meeting on April 26 for business owners and interested residents. The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. at the Reitter building, 1100 King Ave. The building entrance and parking lot are on the west side of the building.

“We really hope that this project is something that local businesses and the community will support,” Obester said.

Donations are being sought to help cover the costs of the trees as well as signage, benches, bike racks and other materials, she said.

The materials will be purchased as funds become available, Obester said.

A fund for the Friends of 43212 beautification project is being set up at the Arlington Bank branch at 1460 Grandview Ave., she said. Donors are being asked to contribute in a range of levels, including $25, $50, $100 and $500 or more.

“The city forester has said the trees will need to be fairly mature two-inch caliper trees, so the cost will be $200 to $300 per tree,” she said.

The trees that will be selected for the project will be ideally suited for an urban setting and able to withstand such elements as vehicular and pedestrian traffic and pollution, Obester said.

“They are going to make West Fifth Avenue a more appealing place, especially for pedestrians and customers of our businesses,” she said.

In addition to their aesthetic benefits, the trees will have environmental benefits for West Fifth Avenue, including helping to prevent runoff into the Olentangy and Scioto rivers, Obester said.

Businesses will have to give their permission for trees to be planted in front of their buildings, she said.

“That’s why we’re hoping a lot of people will attend (Tuesday’s) meeting so they can learn more about the beautification plan,” Obester said.

A donation solicitation packet is being delivered to Fifth Avenue business owners and is available to the public at the Grandview Heights Public Library and at participating businesses.

Maybe you saw her. A woman in her mid-thirties standing near Graffiti Burger on Fifth Ave. with a stroller and two children playing in the strip of grass between the parking lot and sidewalk. She held a sign that said, “Homeless. Hungry. Please help.”

I saw her about a week and a half ago at the height of the lunch hour rush. I’ll be honest – I passed her, thinking at first that I didn’t have any cash on me, and that if I stopped, I would be late to pick up my husband from work at Godman Guild in Weinland Park. By the time I reached Olentangy, I had convinced myself that we would go back after I picked him up and take them to Wendy’s. Nothing fancy, I thought, but at least we could all eat off of the dollar menu for under $20. I was apparently SO preoccupied thinking about it that I didn’t realize I was still on Fifth Ave., not on our usual route to Godman Guild via King Ave, until my four year old said, “Mommy, this is not the way to Daddy’s work.” Oh right!

We picked up Bob from work and headed back across High Street and Olentangy, the whole time wondering what her story was. Was she a scammer? Did it matter? She had kids with her. She might be a scammer, but they might also be hungry. Maybe she lives around here, and that’s why she chose to set up here. Maybe she doesn’t live around here, but thinks that this area is basically Grandview, and that Grandview seems pretty well off – good place to get some help. I wondered would she accept our offer of Wendy’s, or would she only want cash?

We crossed over Grandview Ave. and turned on our blinker to signal to others that we were going to turn into the Graffiti Burger parking lot, then quickly turned it off. She was gone. No stroller, no kids, no sign. Either someone else had taken her family to dinner, given her money to get where she wanted to go, or given her a ride. At least, I hope one of those things happened. I hope someone helped her.

Did you see her? Did you help her? Pass her by? Why or why not? Do you know her story? Certainly she is not the first homeless person to beg in Fifth by Northwest, and won’t be the last. What do you think we as a neighborhood should do if/when we see a person begging in our community?

From new tires to oil changes to spark plugs and steering columns and brakes, here are five auto repair shops in Fifth by Northwest who will service your cars and motorcycles, both domestics and imports. Why bother taking your car to a shop anywhere else when these are right around the corner? Most of them will even offer you a lift home or back to the office after you drop off your car for service.

Neighborhood residents who live, work or conduct business in the area are encouraged to participate in the Fifth by Northwest Area Commission public-elections process. Several commission positions are open or available for relection (more details here). Becky Obester, the Chair of the Fifth by Northwest Area Commission, would like to see a greater resident involvement in this year’s election. “Many residents just don’t know that they can run, or come and actually vote for who is on the commission.”

Fifth by Northwest Area Commissions are elected, not appointed. Collaboratively, the Commission acts as a liaison between neighborhood groups, property owners, residents, developers and city officials. Its meetings offer residents a chance to learn about the latest city occurrences as well as directly participate in discussions about zoning and new development within the Commission’s boundaries. Commission meetings are the first Tuesday of each month, 7PM at the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 2001 Northwest Boulevard (just inside Upper Arlington).

I think what makes these various creative outlets so great is that they are so accessible to the average person. Simply because they love what they do, they want to share their craft.

Late last week, I saw fellow 5xNWer doing the same. Meet Allison Lehman. Allie is a graphic designer/photographer who is hosting a 30 Day Photo Challenge on her blog. We thought we’d get Allie to tell you a bit about it herself, and then challenge you to join in the fun. While you’re at it, maybe you could even take all of your photos in Fifth by Northwest!

How long have you lived in Fifth by Northwest?
Since April of this year.. We love it here!

Tell us a little bit about yourself.
I’m a designer/blogger living here in Columbus. I’m married to Adam and have the cutest dog named Desh. When I’m not working or freelancing, I’m spending time with family, friends or taking photos!

What is the 30 Day Photo Challenge?
It’s a challenge that I’m hosting on my blog. It’s taking place during the month of September and each day has a “theme.” It’s really just to encourage people to think of composition and play with the settings on their camera. What I love about it is there are professional photographers and just photographer admirers that are submitting photos.

What inspired the idea?
I had hosted a 30 Day Drawing Challenge earlier this year and I since I love photography so much, I thought it would work!

It has only been a few days since the challenge started. Do you have any favorite photos or days yet?
So far my favorite day has been the 6th. The theme was “from a low angle” and the photos submitted had such vibrancy and purpose. I really felt that they all looked great together as a set. You can see that day here.

Any quick tips or recommendations for the budding photographers out there in Fifth by Northwest?
Well I’m definitely not a professional but as someone who loves photography as a hobby…just experiment! Buy a camera on Craigslist (digital or film) and just play with settings and subject matter.

How can readers participate in the challenge?
After you take your photos, you can upload them through my blog or post them in this Flickr group. The photos need to be submitted by 9am EST the day of. So if you’re submitting for day 10, they need to be uploaded by September 10th at 9am!

You can learn more about Allison Lehman at http://blog.allisonlehman.com/ or follow her on Twitter at twitter.com/alliepal. You can view her portfolio, and even buy some of her gorgeous art here. Most importantly, go take part in the 30 Day Photo Challenge!

The 8th annual Grandview Avenue Farmers Market (GAFM) is slated to begin Saturday June 4 just north of Third Avenue in the parking lot adjacent to Vino Vino and Figlio’s restaurant. Presenting Sponsors for the Saturday morning market include: The Wagenbrenner Company, Friends of 43212, Small Business Beanstalk, Pearl Alley Growers Association, and Sustainable Grandview. The market is held Saturdays, 10:00a.m. to 1:00p.m. thru October 29th and will feature live music from local performers and a weekly drawing for two movie tickets to the Grandview Theater.

Jeff Wagenbrenner commented, “The Wagenbrenner Company is excited about the new location of the Farmers Market. We’ve always believed that the walkability of Grandview Avenue is the key ingredient to what makes this area so vibrant — and the Farmers Market certainly promotes this.” Friends of 43212 spokesperson Becky Obester added “Friends of 43212 is dedicated to helping local businesses thrive and we are thrilled to be a part of the Grandview Avenue Farmers Market, as it clearly enhances our community and provides residents with a direct food source.” Market vendors accept WIC and Senior vouchers.

Last year, the Farmers Market outgrew the Panzera’s Pizza parking lot with 13 vendors that participated in the Farmers Festival. The market moved in anticipation of adding more vendors for 2011, especially Ohio Proud participants. For the market Saturdays in June, a partial roster of vendors with spring produce will participate including Jacquemin Farms, who will bring freshly picked strawberries June 11 and 18th from their Plain City farm. Since June is National Dairy Month, GAFM is partnering with Snowville Creamery, who will have an exhibit at the June markets educating consumers about dairy farming and dairy products. The full roster of vendors will set up beginning July 9th.

The Grandview Avenue Farmers Market is managed by the Pearl Alley Growers Association (PAGA). PAGA also manages farmers markets at Nationwide downtown, Nationwide Dublin, COSI and Columbus Square. They recruit and certify Ohio farmers for the core of “regular” vendors for the market, who set up each week and sell seasonal fruits and vegetables, cut flowers, honey, salsas, preserves, and herbs.

Bakers are considered a market enhancement, with 2 or 3 bakers participating weekly. PAGA Market Manager Marcy Musson added “with Stan Evans Bakery, Caribou Coffee, the French Loaf, Stauf’s and Panera Bread all in this area, we want to compliment, not compete with these local businesses. However the addition of a few bakers helps to add some market dimension for our customers.”

Guest vendors, who participate once per month are typically budding entrepreneurs, local businesses, and artisans. One new addition is the “Recipe of the Week” — whereby local chefs will provide a recipe for patrons to try at home using market produce.

Market details will be posted on the Fifth By Northwest Area Commission web site, fifthbynorthwest.org and on Facebook and Twitter. To inquire about becoming a Grandview Avenue Farmers Market vendor or for additional information, contact Becky Hetteberg, at info@fifthbynorthwest.org, ph. 614.326-0630 or Dorothy Pritchard, ph. 614.486-6190.

We visited the store with four models: Kate, 22; Erin, 31; Angie, 32 and Tammy, 53. You’ll see each of them above in two looks with prices included. Before we left, I researched what style magazines and editors say are this season’s trends. Take a look at Gap, H&M, Macy’s, Anthropologie, anywhere really…and you’ll see styles that match what our “models” chose.
